    • Why is she un-American?
    • Why is she unfairly unfamous?
    • A:
    • Midwife Mélida Jiménez came to Canada as a political refugee in 1985. In Guatemala, she had been a human rights activist and a medical doctor. In Toronto, Meli’s dream of providing care for pregnant women in her adopted country was realized when she became one of the first graduates of the Ryerson Midwifery Education Program. She was a pioneer in the development of the newly recognized profession, being uniquely suited to care for the women of Toronto's Hispanic communities. Her dedication has seen her welcome more than 1,000 new members of the Toronto community into the world.
